Payment and Reconciliation Officer

Job Description

Our client is a newly established fintech company operating within a well-established financial services group. They are building a modern payment gateway platform and are seeking an experienced Payments & Reconciliations Officer to take ownership of critical financial operations, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and scalability across all payment flows.


This role is central to maintaining the integrity of transaction data across merchants, acquirers, schemes, and internal ledgers in a fast-paced, high-volume payments environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end reconciliation of payment transactions across multiple channels, including card schemes, alternative payment methods, acquirers, processors, and settlement banks
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations between transaction systems, payment gateways, settlement reports, and general ledger accounts
  • Investigate, analyse, and resolve discrepancies such as missing transactions, chargebacks, fees, currency differences, and settlement variances
  • Monitor settlement cycles and ensure timely and accurate posting of merchant payouts, fees, and reserves
  • Work closely with product, engineering, finance, and external partners to resolve reconciliation breaks and improve data integrity
  • Support month-end close processes by providing accurate reconciliation reports and explanations of variances
  • Maintain strong internal controls to ensure audit readiness and compliance with financial and regulatory requirements
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline reconciliation processes as transaction volumes scale
  • Assist with the implementation of new payment methods, acquirers, or system changes, ensuring reconciliation logic is correctly embedded
  • Produce clear, structured reporting for management on reconciliation status, exceptions, and operational risks


Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in payments reconciliation, financial operations, or settlement roles within fintech, banking, or financial services
  • Strong experience in payment gateways, PSPs, merchant acquiring, or similar high-volume transaction environments
  • Solid understanding of payment flows, settlement cycles, acquirer processors, and ledger systems
  • Highly analytical with exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills; experience with reconciliation tools or automation platforms is a strong advantage
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex data discrepancies and drive resolution across technical and non-technical teams
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, financial accuracy, and audit requirements
  • Highly organised, proactive, and comfortable operating in a fast-growing, evolving fintech environment


Nice to Have:

  • Experience with SQL, financial reporting tools, or reconciliation automation systems
  • Background in merchant acquiring, payment service providers, or large-scale transaction processing
  • Exposure to system migrations, new product launches, or onboarding new acquirers/payment methods
  • Experience supporting audits or regulatory reviews in a financial services environment
